25 May Encouraging People to Become Governors
According to the School Governors One Stop Shop (SGOSS) there are 40000 vacant Governor places at any one time. Being a School Governor is rewarding and plays a vital part in shaping young lives – but how do you encourage people to apply?
Everybody leads busy lives these days – we’re working hard and playing even harder – but most people still have a desire to contribute to their local community. They’re just not sure how and worry that they won’t have the time or the skills required.
Information about the role of Governor is available on most, if not all, Local Authority websites, aswell as some school websites – but it is usually text-based and can be quite heavy-going.
- What does the role of School Governor involve?
- What sort of ‘expert’ should become a Governor?
- What makes a ‘good’ Governor?
- What qualifications do you need to become a Governor?
- How much time does the role require?
You can view the course here.
I think it’s a great introduction to some of the best bits of our courses (like all Modern Governor e-learning courses, it’s interactive, bite-sized and informative). But not only that – it’s a great way to show prospective Governors what the role requires and encourage them to apply.
If your Local Authority or school would like to have this course available on your website please contact me. There’s no obligation for you to subscribe to Modern Governor (although more than 40% of Local Authorities do) – I just want to make the world a little bit better by filling those Governor vacancies!
