18 Jun Governor Live Step-by-step part 2: taking part on your smartphone or tablet
The first online Governor Live event takes place this coming Monday (the 22nd of June) at 19.30BST – during the event Emma Knights, chief executive of the National Governors’ Association will lead a governor-to-governor discussion entitled What does this government mean for governance? The event is open to all governors, school leaders and those with an interest in supporting and developing effective governance and in this post we’ll outline how to get the most out of the event – with a particular focus on accessing via smartphone or tablet.
The event officially starts at 7.30pm, though you’ll be able to access from 7.15-7.20 to ensure that you can get yourself a drink (we don’t serve alcoholic beverages, but within reason you are welcome to bring your own) and be ready to start at half past seven. Once you’ve registered you can use your desktop or laptop computer to take part, or you can download the Adobe Connect mobile app for iOS or Android to enable you to take part using your smartphone or tablet from wherever you happen to be.
What to expect on your computer
Once you’ve logged in to Governor Live through your web browser (typically Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox) you’ll see video feeds from the hosts and presenters, any presentation material and, to the right, a space to enter your comments, questions and observations:
The layout might change as the event progresses and you’ll be able to interact in different ways – with the presenters, other governors attending the event and by giving feedback on this session and helping to shape the direction of future sessions.
What to expect on your smartphone or tablet
On a mobile device this is how the view above appears:
and on a tablet it looks like this:
In this section of the event, you can see a presentation, video feeds from any hosts/presenters and a space to interact with the presenters and other participants via instant message. The four icons to the top left of the screen allow you to focus on any of these, or return to an overview of the event. You’ll be able to hear the presenters at all times and give feedback or comment using the instant messaging option.
Where you can take part from
You can take part from anywhere you have an internet connection. If you are using the mobile app it’s recommended to connect to a wifi network if possible, as video conferencing will use a lot of data on a mobile 3G or 4G plan – so you need to have an unlimited data plan or a large data allowance, and of course you are responsible for any data charges you incur. Also, a pair of headphones might be useful if you’d like to take part on the train or other crowded environment.
Watch a demonstration
Further to our previous post on how to access Governor Live using a mobile device, as promised here’s a follow-up narrated video on how to enter Governor Live and interact with its different elements using your mobile device.
Don’t forget that Governor Live is free to attend and take part in, so use the Share button at the foot of this post to share it with your fellow governors ad trustees – and don’t forget that you need to be registered in order to take part, but registration is a simple process which takes about a minute. If you have questions then tweet them to @ModernGovernor, ask them on our Facebook page or email firstname.lastname@example.org – and we look forward to meeting you on Monday!
