In this blog post she introduces what the session will cover – and there are details of how to register for and take part in the session.

Planning for success(ion)

No-one ever recruited a headteacher who paused, looked around and then uttered these words:

“Well… go on then. If no-one else will do then it I will.”

And yet too often that’s the story of the recruitment process for chairs of governors. Perhaps we tolerate that because it’s “only a voluntary role” and in the scheme of things it’s not that important when compared to appointing a headteacher, is it?

I don’t believe that’s the case. I believe the role of chair is a key leadership position in a school and can have a huge impact for good or for ill. Perhaps a real or perceived recruitment challenge also puts pressure on chairs to stay in post “too long” (what ever that really means). I’ve certainly heard it as an excuse for chairs who are or have become ineffective to continue in the role (“no-one else will do it”). How we can address that and plan well for succession – and success – is what the next Governor Live session is about.

What will this session cover?

During this Governor Live session we’ll be exploring how succession should work – discussing “how long is too long?”, why we ought to be planning for succession and what we can do in practical terms around:

  • Recruitment;
  • Induction;
  • Spotting and nurturing leadership potential;
  • Distributing leadership;
  • Developing the role of the vice-chair;
  • Developing the role of chair to make it more attractive.

We’ll also think about what the implications can be if we get things wrong. The session won’t be a long, one-way presentation, there will be plenty of opportunities for questions, comments, sharing and interaction. You might like to read the recent article entitled Why I’m moving on in preparation for this session.

Who is it for?

Chairs of governors (both new and experienced), vice-chairs and anyone else with an interest in effective school governance. You don’t have to be a Modern Governor subscriber to take part – Governor Live sessions are open to all.

When will this session run?

Planning for Success(ion) begins at 8pm BST on Thursday the 29th of September 2016 and will run for between 45 minutes and an hour.

What if I can’t make it on the 29th?

The session will be recorded, so you’ll be able to replay it – but if you’d like to contribute, get your questions answered and interact with those attending, then you’ll need to attend at 8pm on the 29th.

How can I take part?
