Modern Governor was invited to attend the Knowsley Council School Governors’Conference last Friday and joined around 50 local governors in The Huyton Suite to hear from a range of speakers on the theme of Ensuring Quality.

Steve Barker, National Leader of Governance started the day off after the introductions with  a thought provoking session Real Governance – 2013 and Beyond which asked the delegates to reflect on their current role in school improvement and put the current expectations of governance into perspective against the changing environment of the updated Ofsted framework and tougher accountability.

There then followed a a session led by Julie Young, Director of Schools and Educational Attainment that looked at Knowsley’s Self Improving Schools Partnership which aims to support collaboration and develop strong practice within Knowsley schools. Some key questions were asked about the extent to which governing bodies are aware of the self improving school system and the implications of it for governors, particularly how they may become more involved in the broader system.

Gillian Allcroft, Policy Manager of the NGA started the afternoon session looking at Governance – The National Perspective and guided us through some of the recent changes and what we may expect in the near future, before handing over to former senior HMI Frank Norris who is currently Senior Advisor at Stockport MBC to talk about Governors and the new Ofsted framework – experiences to date. This final session was very much a hands on session where the audience had to put themselves into various situations including that of an inspector and look at evidence to judge school performance. Frank shared some of his observations as an inspector and gave the audience plenty to think about in terms of evaluating their own impact especially asking challenging questions of their school leadership team.

Modern Governor was pleased to have been asked to be part of the event and many governors found time to come and chat to me about their experiences of training and Modern Governor e-learning. We hope to meet you all again soon!

We are out and about visiting several events over the next few months, take a look at where we will be nextIf you have an event you would like us to come along to, then please contact
